Company MD arrested for service tax default

Service Tax officials have arrested Myron John Remedios, managing director of Rare Hospitality and Services Pvt Ltd, on the charge of collecting service tax to the tune of Rs 4.5 crore and not remitting the same to the department


Service Tax officials have arrested Myron John Remedios, managing director of Rare Hospitality and Services Pvt Ltd, on the charge of collecting service tax to the tune of Rs 4.5 crore and not remitting the same to the department.

The company, which is involved in providing housekeeping services to major hospitals, hotels and corporate clients, haven't paid service tax from April 2010 onwards.

John Remedios was produced before the Esplanade Court on Wednesday and the judge remanded him to judicial custody up to March 24.

The arrest came after the amnesty period under the Voluntary Compliance Encouragement Scheme (VCES) for those who never filed their service tax returns and those who stopped doing so, ended on December 31, 2013.
