Pune: The recent spate of theft cases on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway has baffled Raigad and Pune cops. According to police officials, two unknown youths are allegedly following and robbing businessmen of Ahmednagar when they are on their way to Mumbai. After two cases with the same modus operandi was registered at Talegaon and Panvel police stations, a third case has now been reported at Khalapur police station on Saturday.
46-year-old businessman, Satwar Mukeshbhai Mofatlal, was heading to Mumbai from Ahmednagar to deliver cash on Saturday morning when the incident took place near Khalapur toll plaza on Pune-Mumbai expressway.
"One of the suspects was travelling in the same bus with Mofatlal, who was carrying a bag containing Rs 26 lakh. When the bus halted at the toll plaza, the businessman went to the washroom with the bag. As he was coming back towards the bus, the suspect pushed him and snatched the bag. Mofatlal tried to chase him, but another youth came and the duo beat him up and fled," informed Chandrakant Deshmukh, inspector at Khalapur police station.
Deshmukh added that this is the third incident when suspects have followed businessman from Ahmednagar in a bus.
"Based on the description given by Mofatlal, we are preparing a sketch of the suspects. There were no CCTV cameras nearby so we don't have any footage of the incident," said the inspector.
