With its predictable but charming storyline and scenic locales, Emily in Paris was just the palate-cleanser that viewers across the world needed, trapped in their homes by the early throes of the pandemic. Of course, no show that's set in Paris, one of the world's fashion capitals, can slip past without raising commentary about the clothes worn by the cast and, on that front, the show did deliver. With the release of the second season, viewers eagerly expected more of the same. Once again, the makers deliver with big, bold fashion that veers on the unapologetically OTT at times, but also does a fine job of capturing this year's hottest trends. Three mid-day readers talk about the styles that stood out.
While colour-blocking has been around for a while now, Emily's wardrobe features ensembles with clashing prints and bright patterns. "I found that the clothes this season are more tailored towards being Instagram-friendly, while the first season's fashion was more relatable. This has much to do with Emily's social media-heavy marketing job. Unlike last season, where her clothes were more colour-coordinated, this time, she's taken risks with bolder and brighter pieces. I think this reflects the overall mood of fashion-lovers in the post-pandemic world quite well," shares Kadambari Gupte, 33, founder of a handcrafted soaps brand.
Offsetting Emily's bright, vibrant wardrobe is her Parisienne boss Sylvie's French woman wardrobe comprising classic, well-tailored but understated pieces. "Of all the characters, I relate the most with Sylvie's fashion. Her aesthetic is unmistakeably French - she prefers solids over prints and has a penchant for minimalism. Pencil skirts, high slits and power blazers draped casually over the shoulders all find her place in her sophisticated and bold wardrobe. Her bright purple coat, which she wears over a classic LBD is especially memorable," shares Ritu June Rathod, a 28-year-old model and athlete.
From headbands to fingerless gloves (first introduced by Paris Hilton on her cooking show) to berets, Emily relies on fun accessories to add that something extra to her outfits. "This is a great tip for days when you're wearing something relatively safe and predictable but want to insert a little personality and character to your overall look. I've always been a fan of her signature phone case, which seems to be an extension of her character's profession and lends a playful touch," Gupte adds. Further, this season also saw Emily sporting pieces with exaggerated sleeves - another major trend for 2022.
"I admire Mindy's style because she, like me, leans into the avant-garde aesthetic. Her style can be quite androgynous while Emily is more typically feminine. Her performance outfits, in particular, stand out, especially her black leotard that she pairs with chunky gold jewellery, her love for feathers and big, bold ruffles. For instance, at St Tropez, she rocks a bold yellow ruffled top with purple tweed shorts, while her yellow printed coordinated corset and skirt are chic and wearable," says content writer Anandita De, 32, pointing out that ruffles will continue to hold their sway in 2022 as well.
