Even though the new Covid-19 variant looms large over the start of 2022, make-up gurus are predicting an exciting year of non-traditional trends. Make-up artist Natasha Nyss decodes four statement-making styles that are worth checking out.

Multiple eyeliner wings

From Deepika Padukone to Priyanka Chopra, actors, models, and influencers are ditching the single winged liner for two or even three wings. You can either create the second and third wing along the lower lash line or pull your primary wing inward for a hollow triangular shape at the outer edge of your eye. "Blend out the edges of your wings for a smoky finish. Prime your eyes and apply concealer to make the eyeliner last longer," Nyss says.

Purple blush

Social media is abuzz with this unconventional blush colour, which works just as well in powder and cream form. "You can either apply it directly on the apples of your cheeks for a flushed effect, or on your lids, nose and above your cheekbones [blended into your hairline] for an '80s vibe. Start with a small amount of blush and build it using a fan or powder blush. Cream and liquid blushes are easier to apply and create a light, subtle finish," Nyss explains.

Bare skin base

Serum-like foundations that let the natural texture of your skin shine through are in vogue right now, says Nyss. Many formulas also provide hydration and anti-ageing benefits. "No one wants to sport a cake-y face or layers of foundation. Now, the emphasis is more on skincare with the foundation adding a light, luminous touch. Cream contours over powder work better with such bases," she elucidates.

Over-lined lips

The quest for fuller, more luscious lips isn't a recent phenomenon, but make-up lovers are trading in fillers for an overlined, defined pout. "Use a slightly darker liner and accentuate the middle portion of your lips," Nyss suggests.
