If the fashion pundits' predictions for 2022 are any indication, skin will be in, in a big way in the coming year. Not surprisingly, runways have been witnessing a resurgence of garments featuring high, dramatic slits. "While typically reserved only for formal âdos, slits, whether worn on dresses or skirts, can add a touch of effortless glamour. Unlike many other trends, most people shy away from wearing slits thinking they cannot pull them off. That's a pity because this trend is quite versatile and can up both the style and comfort quotients of your outfits," says image consultant and personal branding expert Mihika Bhanot.

In professional settings, high -waist pencil skirts that feature a slit at the back or on the sides work exceptionally well, Bhanot says. "Pair these with a ruffled shirt or blouse, or coloured blazer with a tee or tank top inside. Satin, silk or crepe shirts or blouses add to the oomph and drama. Since the bottom half of your outfit is relatively plain, accentuate your top half with creative necklines - a boat neck or a strappy top, for instance, will bring your look together. Don't forget to wear heels with this look," she advises. Styles that feature ruffles within the slit are also well-suited to the workplace, she adds. However, keep your top half relatively simple since the ruffles at the bottom are already creating a visual focal point. Peplum tops especially are a strict no-no.
Long skirts or gowns with a high slit are well suited to formal or semi-formal evening âdos. "Many brands are offering wraparound skirts that create the illusion of a long slit. Wear these with a snug crop top or a fitted shirt that can be tucked in - the ensemble will complement your body shape and accentuates your curves. It is a great style for women with a triangular body type, as it enhances the waistline," Bhanot adds. While experimenting with slits for casual or evening wear, she also recommends venturing beyond the typical skirts and dresses. "The iconic Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham wore pants with slits way back in the day. Many high-street brands are offering similar but updated styles this year where the slit is further accentuated with a zipper or buttons," she points out. Wear these with an oversized blazer to keep the style from looking dated or a boyfriend shirt that's draped only on one shoulder. When it comes to Indian wear, look for sharara bottoms with a slit or even a lehenga featuring an evening gown-like high slit, if you dare," she concludes.
