Guide Awards 2019: Lesser-known Irani Cafes - Kyani & Co

Kyani & Co. in Mumbai is one of the few surviving Irani cafes in the city. The café was started in 1904 by an Iranian gentleman named Khodamrad Merzeban. The legacy continued in 1959 after Aflatoon Shokri and his family took over the popular bakery. The place is now run by Farokh Shokri and is a hotspot for lip-smacking food. Kyani is famous for its mutton cutlets, chicken dhansak, pulao and kheema pav along with host bakery products.

The Guide Restaurant Awards 2019, mid-day’s annual recognition for Mumbai’s standout food and drink talent, honours some of the city’s last surviving Irani cafés for enduring culinary contribution by a diaspora community. Unique to Mumbai, they fight inflation and competition from fast food. The Irani’s, as the cafes, are lovingly called offer no-nonsense service, food unique to the Iranian Zoroastrian/Iranian Muslim community with a charm that’s redolent of old-world Bombay.
