In a fateful turn of events, South Mumbai fine-dine Ellipsis shuts down next month. Owner Rohan Talwar tells us why he's shifting the restaurant from the city to Dubai

Colaba restaurant Ellipsis, which gave the city a taste of high-end, seasonal New American cuisine back in 2012, will be downing its shutters by mid-April. However, it's not goodbye forever, because the restaurant is shifting to Dubai.

Owner Rohan Talwar reveals over email from Dubai that the move to the Middle East is part of an international expansion plan. "Dubai is a great next step for the Ellipsis brand. It will allow us to leverage our global resources in order to pioneer the Dubai market in the same manner that we did in Mumbai five years ago," he elaborates.

He informs us that the new Ellipsis, set for an early 2018 launch, will be put together by the same California-based design team that worked on the Mumbai outpost, and the food and drink menus will be developed at the company headquarters in the US.

The restaurant, which had started floundering at some point, got a shot in the arm after the arrival of Chinese-Canadian head chef Kelvin Cheung. After Cheung's departure, Vietnam-born chef Phuong Tran took over the kitchen.

When asked about the reason for moving out of Mumbai, Talwar says he believes it is time to reinvent and offer the country a new, exciting dining option. He adds, "We are coming up with something new, but it's too soon to go into details. For now, we want to pay a fitting tribute to Ellipsis. We look forward to welcoming our loyal patrons over this next month to indulge one last time before we begin another chapter in culinary history."
