Mumbai boasts of several caves including Kanheri caves, Mahakali caves and Jogeshwari caves, which are historically significant and pertain mainly to Buddhist and Hindu history.

Interestingly, these caves were a refuge for monks and priests and a spot to meditate and study.

The Mandapeshwar caves, which were located in Borivali, were destroyed by the Portuguese and in its place you can find Mount Poinsur.

The Elephanta caves, which are quite popular, boast of some of the biggest sculptures in the world.

On the other hand, the Mahakali caves in Andheri are quite derelict and need urgent attention.

The Jogeshwari caves are often frequented by devotees during festivals like Mahashivratri.
