My girlfriend wants me to convert

24 August,2012 07:03 AM IST |   |  Dear Diana

Dear Diana, I'm 27 and have been in a relationship with this girl for two years now. The problem is that she comes from a conservative Muslim family while I am a Christian.

She hasn't even mentioned about our marriage plans to her family out of fear. On the other hand, my parents are more than willing to accept her as their daughter-in-law. She doesn't even have to change her religion to do that. But she thinks her parents won't agree to this idea and wants me to convert to Islam; something I'm not prepared to do. I love her very much but I don't know how to go ahead with this.

Dear Vjunesh,
It is going to be a rocky relationship and will cause a lot of fights and arguments. You will never be accepted by her family. There is no point pretending to convert. Religion is a big deal and if you are getting married or talking about it there will have to be some compromises. She does not want to budge, nor do you. You need to do a rethink about your marriage. As her folks are conservative, they will not relent. So I suggest, you need to keep all these aspects in mind, before you take the plunge.
