Sonic has been trying to relive its glory days for a long time. Sometimes they get it right and it's a hit, but most times it's been a miss. Unfortunately, this time it is a miss. Sonic has a decent premise. You create a character that is ultimately laid out in the storyline where you save the day. This all sounds good in theory, but the execution is far from decent. The customisation for your character is just stupid, some changes are hardly noticeable. All species look almost the same. The story is not the best, but it isn't bad either, you can get into it over the course of the game.
These things aside, the game got the most vital thing wrong, the speed. While you do get bursts of it occasionally, the game makes you stop a lot, especially to fight enemies. The 3D sections are also confusing and it is very hard to enjoy. The classic levels, where you play in 2D, the controls are out of whack, and very random, with constant breaks in flow. This is a Sonic game only in name, it has lost the very speed the hedgehog thrives on. Maybe, next time, they will get it right.
