Gadget Review: Why Google's Nexus 5X is a good buy

Google's Nexus devices offer a window into what Android OS is about, and what it could be if well executed. LG Nexus 5X has managed to achieve that well

Battery: Irrespective of the amount you spend on a phone, it should last at least one full day. The 2,700mAh battery in the Nexus 5X struggles to achieve that. We would have still managed, though, if the USB cable didn't have Type-C ports at both ends. You can't use it in most laptops, computers or power banks. You will have to buy another Type-C cable or carry the bundled charger with you at all times. The only good thing is that you get four hours of run-time in just 10 minutes.

Display and design: Once the phone is in your hand, you will love it. Though there's nothing astounding, it's lightweight and fits into your hands. The matte finish in the back adds to the appeal. Its 5.2-inch Full HD display is another upper. Colours are natural and the 423 ppi pixel density adds to clarity while reading. The Gorilla Glass 3 protection keeps it safe from scratches.

OS:
The OS is its most impressive part. We won't talk of the UI, but the security flaws that Google has solved with Android Marshmallow 6.0. Firstly, you can't reset a phone from the power button without unlocking it. Secondly, if you set a pin, you will need it to boot your device at the start. The third major change is that each app must re-seek permissions from a user post installation, thus giving more control to users.

Hardware:
With 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, the Nexus 5X offers a deal worthy of the price. The device uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC with 1.8GHz hexa-core processor and Adreno 418 GPU. We tested it across apps and faced no problem with performance. We missed an external SD card but you can always opt for the 32GB model. The finger print sensor is quick to read and we faced no problems either.

Camera: We love the 5MP front and 12.3MP rear camera (with 4K). Both worked to our satisfaction during the day as well as in low light conditions. We, however, wish for features like auto exposure lock and auto focus lock. Users will love built-in features like photosphere, which allows you to capture 360-degree image, and lens bur to add more effects to a picture.

Connectivity:
The Nexus 5X supports 2G, 3G and 4G LTE (all bands), making it apt for those who travel a lot. Sadly, it's a single sim phone. It supports Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n/c) dual band, GPS, NFC and digital compass.

Audio:
Audio quality is decent during phone calls, thanks to the three mics on the phone. It has only a single speaker in the front, so audio playback leaves you wanting more.
