Aamir Khan had to step back from attending an event in Pune on Sunday, given that both, he and wife Kiran Rao were diagnosed with swine flu.
With the power couple under the weather, the condition - swine flu has come to the fore, and if you are wondering what you can do to prevent catching it, here are a few tips.

Recognise the symptom

Swine flu is much like the common flu or a cough and cold. Its symptoms include fever, headache, chills, diarrhoea, sore throat, cough, sneezing, blocked nose, and fatigue.

While not every case of the common cold should be treated as swine flu and neither should it ring alarm bells, if you have been having high fever for over three days or have been experiencing sudden bouts of breathlessness, visit your doctor immediately.

Tips to prevent the onset of Swine Flu

1) Always cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or a cough.

2) When you have a cold use a disposable tissue instead of a handkerchief and throw it in a dustbin after use. Disposing of the used tissue properly is essential to avoid the spread of the virus to other people.

3) When in a public place, avoid touching your eye, nose or mouth often as you may, unwittingly, transfer the virus into your body - causing you to fall ill.

4) Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or an alcohol based hand sanitizer. This is an especially important step if you are in a crowded place, are using a common bathroom or touch things that many people handle; for example, door handles, bathroom knobs etc.

5) Droplet transmission is also an extremely common way to contract the infection. Therefore it is best you sanitize your hands well after touching objects like keyboards, laptops, common desk areas, chairs etc.

6) Avoid close contact with people who have the infection. Always maintain a distance of 6-10 feet to avoid air borne transmission of the disease.

7) If someone in your family is suffering from swine flu, wipe down surfaces with a disinfectant and keep the room clutter free and well ventilated.

8) If you are suffering from swine flu or someone you know is, then make sure you (or that person) stats at home for one day after he/she has had the last bout of fever.

9) Children and the elderly should avoid going to crowded places.

10) Wear a surgical mask when you are visiting a crowded place during an outbreak of swine flu.

11) Stay healthy and keep your immunity up. Eat healthily and drink lots of water
