As a round-up to their art calendar, the Colaba-based Sakshi Gallery has organised Shades of Gray, an exhibition featuring a selection of images in black, white and shades of grey, by acclaimed artists and photographers. The curated exhibits are from Sakshi Gallery's own stock of artworks.

Pablo Bartholomew, Watchmaker, Bombay

Sunil Gawde, Armed Response, 2006; Acrylic paint on canvas

The exhibition includes much-feted works by Julian Opie, Justin Ponmany, Pablo Bartholomew, Rekha Rodwittiya, Riyas Komu, Safaa Erruas, Shilpa Gupta, Subramanyan KG, Sunil Gawde, Vasudha Thozhur and Waswo X Waswo.

Riyas Komu, Karachi Series, 2005; Black and white photograph edition

Justin Ponmany, Untitled (Diptych), 2011; Acrylic and holographic pigment on canvas

The monochrome selection aims to make the viewer contemplate and gaze beyond the evident, towards the unsaid and unexplored. While some of the works try to go to the core of an issue, others suggest alternate readings to events. The show gives expression to issues that are personal, political, immediate, universal, social and timeless.

Vasudha Thozhur, The Anatomy of Celebration, 2010; Inkjet print with UV balanced ink on aluminum composite board

Rekha Rodwittiya, Memory Text, 2011; Digital inkjet print of autobiographic photo image and ink drawing on watercolour paper

Speaking about the concept behind the event, director Geetha Mehra says, "It occurred to me that a number of artists do work in black, white and grey, so why not have an exhibition of just this palette? India is so full of colour. This gave me an opportunity to pause and experience another colour-zone."

Waswo X Waswo, The Sufi, 2008; Black and white digital photograph hand-painted by Rajesh Soni

Pablo Bartholomew, A gym, Bombay, 1979; Archival pigment print
