Celebrate water in all its forms

Tomorrow evening, dive into tales of Nagaland's water spirits, Chinese waterboxing monks and listen to Pablo Neruda's poetry at Water Stories, an event conceived by Junoon
theatre. It is a part of Nehru Science Centre's ongoing exhibition to commemorate the end of the decade (2005-15), proclaimed by the United Nations as the International Decade for Action, Water for Life.

Sameera Iyengar, co-founder, Junoon, shares, "We've put together a collage of performances, which will take you through worlds where water evokes homelands and mythologies, romances, music, poetry and a vibrant thirst for life. While science can tell us about an element's behaviour, properties and how it physically affects us, art tells us how we receive and experience things, and therefore, what meaning they have for us in our lives."

Kallirroi Tziafeta

Witness a storytelling performance by city-based artiste, Merenla Imsong, who will narrate memories from her state, Nagaland, while Greece-born Kallirroi Tziafeta will enact the roles of a waterboxing monk and a young girl from China. Theatre artistes Asmit Pathare and Ratnabali Bhattacharjee will share poetry by Pablo Neruda and AK Ramanujan. Interestingly, the line-up also includes a staging of Soni Mahiwal by Jhoom Theatre. "In this popular romantic tragedy of Punjab, water unites the lovers and then, destroys them too.

Merenla Imsong

The existence of water plays a central role in this story, like in many other Indian stories. After all, thousands of years ago, people settled in India because it was the land of rivers, which made nature bountiful, and allowed us to live well. It actually plays a critical role in our geographies, our mythologies and our imagination," adds Iyengar.
