Score, stress and sand

Wondering how these three are related? Attend a bottle cutting workshop this weekend to find out

If you have an empty glass bottle at home, don't throw it. Instead, use it as a lamp, candle-holder, self-watering planter, wind chime or even a bird feeder. Sign up for a three-hour Bottle Cutting workshop by Hobby In A Box, a Bengaluru based start-up that provides DIY craft kits.

Open to 10 guests above the age of 16, it will be conducted by Rekha Kumari and Manveen Kaur. The workshop is divided into three parts. First, the guests will learn to score a bottle - drawing a clean line at the desired breaking point using Ephrem's bottle cutter kit.

Then, they will stress it, which involves heating and cooling the bottle repeatedly to break it. Next, they will use a sandpaper to sand the edges to avoid sharp cuts. "There are a few challenges. You need to be careful of the flecks of glass that fly off during the scoring and stressing process.

While sanding, ensure that the glass doesn't break," says Kumari. The duo will also teach you how to decorate the bottle and convert the top part into an electric lamp. Guests need to bring a few old glass bottles. All other material will be provided at the workshop.
