Rating: '
The ranger ain't gonna like this! Boo Boo (voiced by Justin Timberlake)
and Yogi Bear (by Dan Aykroyd) are out to snitch pic-a-nic baskets
What's it about: Unless you had an unprivileged childhood (read: no cable), your cartoon-watching experience would be incomplete, had you been ignorant of Yogi Bear and his pic-a-nic basket-snatching antics. The brown bears at Jellystone Park are like the Laurel And Hardy of yore, one being the rascal and the other being the feeble voice of reason. Then there is a Park Ranger who bumbles and fumbles his way day after day and who could well do without YB's shenanigans. When a documentary filmmaker (Faris) decides to document the lives of the two bears, it seems there will be some order in their disorderly lives. Enter a greedy mayor who wants the park rezoned and deforested. You can rest assured the Jellystoners will not go quietly into the night.
What's hot: The CGI used in the film is on par with the best in the genre. Fur detailing is to be seen to be believed. JT and Aykroyd are perfectly cast.
What's not: This may well be a film for kids of all ages, but it tends to insult your intelligence or thrive on your nostalgia (depending which end of the bend you are on). The plot is threadbare. Anna Faris continues with the Scary Movie schtick that catapulted her into public attention. Cavanagh is decidedly sedate and Miller doesn't do much to liven the proceedings either. Everybody seems so... restrained!
What to do: Go 'Gee!' when you see Yogi but that's about it because the Ranger ain't happy and neither are we. We feel we've been snitched.
