Star power combined with little competition from holdover hits, 'Sultan' and 'Kabali', ensured a happy opening weekend for buddy-cop flick, 'Dishoom'. With Rs 37.32 crore in its kitty, the Varun Dhawan, John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez-starrer has now made its place as the sixth highest opener of this year so far, surpassing 'Udta Punjab', which had done a three-day business of Rs 33.80 crore.

The favourable response at the box office in India - the film is doing better in multiplexes as compared to single screens - found an echo in key international markets of the UAE/Gulf region, US, UK and Australia. The collection is a reason to cheer for John, whose last release, 'Rocky Handsome', in May, failed to set cash registers ringing. Varun, too, can look forward to add 'Dishoom' as his sixth successive hit since his 2012 debut, 'Student Of The Year'.

Trade guru Amod Mehra says, "'Dishoom' was promoted well and as expected, opened to decent collection with the figures improving each day. As such, family entertainers make for ideal weekend viewing. Since it has no major opposition at the box office, the film should manage to sail through during this week."
The numbers would have jumped substantially on Sunday had it not been the torrential downpour in various parts of the country, feels trade expert Taran Adarsh. "Nevertheless, the business was excellent and met expectations. Weekdays will be crucial," he adds.
Meanwhile, 'Sultan' made Rs 3 crore in its fourth weekend, taking its total to Rs 296.86 crore.
