Aloo Chat - Recipe for disaster

What's it about: When a movie draws parallels between inter-caste marriage and the difference in travelling first class and second, you know it's going to be a bumpy ride. Aloo Chat is not just bumpy but also tiring and annoying in parts.

A love story set in a Delhi about a Hindu boy Nikhil (Aftab) wanting to marry a Muslim girl Aamna and break age-old traditions and customs, never rises above predictability and cliches.

The two-hour plus movie tries every trick in the bag and relies on gags that fall flat to entertain and make you laugh. And there's also a sexologist chacha (Manoj Pahwa) whose job is to crack jokes on men's libido, and insinuate some really vulgar statements.

What's hot: Robby Grewal's previous work MP3: Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar was a decent attempt at making a teenage love story. Definitely inspired or wanting to desperately duplicate Hrishikesh Mukherjee's school of work, the director raises a few chuckles when he tries to attempt something original.

What's not: Aloo Chat has too many ingredients but no masala to give it a flavour. To begin with, the opening sequence introducing characters of the family has been done to death in the past.

The film lacks a breath of fresh air and keeps coming up with lame one-liners, jarring background music (done by a Laughter Challenge reject sound technician!) and a script that goes around in circles like a noodle.

Performance-wise, neither Aftab nor Aamna have much to do. The former tries hard to work his dimples and flash his pearlies while the latter is reduced to a showpiece clutching her hands and trying to look cute in every frame.

The only character that impresses and stands out in this sorry affair is Nikhil's mama Chhadami played brilliantly by Sanjay Mishra. The music is below average and even though the RDB track during the end credits is catchy, chances are you would be rushing to the nearest exit.

What to do: Neither refreshing nor entertaining in any manner, Aloo Chaat fails to impress on every front with its lacklustre script and uninspired cast.
