Hub of activities and enjoyment

Dosti Foundation School,Shil-Thane is always a hub of activity. If it is not having a story telling session, then it is  a short film on Fire safety. Such diverse activities, but important, nevertheless.

The other day a group of pre-school students went to visit the Reliance Smart Bazaar at Shil Phata to understand the process of buying things at a supermarket. After going around the market and learning how a supermarket works, every student was given a cupcake by the teachers from the same place.

To make reading  books interesting, in these days of the Kindle, the school had Ms.Lopamudra Mohanty, a Storyteller visit the school, and share with them her stories. She involved the students in the stories, in a manner that it became an immersive experience.

Speakers from various walks of life are often guest speakers and students learn about Etiquette and manners; coping with exam stress and even pottery. The school has invited a potter from Khumbarwada to showcase the art of making items out of clay or mud. Learning the importance of a balanced diet was never more interesting than this-students brought vegetables and fruits to school. Even as the teacher explained the nutritive value of each of the items on the table, the teachers very quickly cut up the vegetables and fruits making an attractive vegetable and fruit salad. How can any child refuse to eat vegetables or fruits if they are presented in such a manner?

Another day, representatives from the National Burns Centre spoke to the students on precautions and safety measures to be followed near gas cylinders, stoves and other fire generating equipment. This is to be followed up by a Fire Drill shortly. Said a spokesperson for the school,” Childhood is so fleeting, and in these days of social media, everything is out there making our young ones older before their time. Our goal is to help these children savour their childhood even as they are learning new things.”

We wish we could go back to our childhood to experience such a form of learning!!!!
