The Breakdown- Love Aaj Kal (2009)
Om Shanti Om may have made her into an overnight star, it took her almost two years to bloom into an actor. With Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal, she showed there’s a lot more to her than a charming and captivating screen presence. She played Mira, a woman whose very first glimpse shows us her breakup with the man she loves. It’s staged in an amusing manner. But the scene that stands out is in the climax, when she reunites with him. They both wanted their careers more than their chemistry, even tried dating different people but ultimately were meant to be together. And when he’s back, she cannot help but breakdown. Obviously, these are tears of joy.
Breakdown Part 2- Cocktail (2012)
With Cocktail, she transformed into both an actor and a star. Veronica is one of her most vulnerable roles yet. A woman who derives a lot of pleasure in no-holds-barred relationships falls in love with a man who’s no different. When she falls in love with him, all hell breaks loose as he has fallen for their roommate, Meera, who’s a saint. At a pub, she’s all inebriated and confesses to him she’s ready to be the woman he wants. Tears cannot stop flowing and this time, they are not of joy.
The Rage- Goliyon Ki Raasleela- Ram Leela (2013)
This was an eccentric, explosive saga with two volatile leads whose romance knew no bounds. Neither did their rage. Their siblings are killed in what starts as a game of fun. The showdown that follows next is a testimony to how violent the two in love can be. Deepika Padukone is an absolute firecracker in this scene, and in the film too.
The Confession- Piku (2015)
Piku is a highly unlikeable character. She’s always right, in her head and through her words. At a party, when her father sees a man hitting on her, he says she’s had physical relationships with many men in the past, she’s clearly embarrassed. Later, she confesses out of anger that she indeed has had physical relationships with men. She’s venting it out all due to her father’s irresponsible behaviour. This is the time when he’s taking a dump. It’s a fantastically filmed scene and performed with equal precision.
The Unforgettable Breakdown- Tamasha (2015)
No need to say which one. Of course, the unforgettable Agar Tum Saath Ho track that’s both dazzling and devastating. It’s performed to perfection. Few can ace breakdown scenes like Deepika Padukone. She’s thwarted by guilt, and the man she loves is on a self-destructive path. The audio is aching, but the video is far more overwhelming.
